Tower of Death * version 0.5
------------------------------
made by Stijn Arnauts, email
me at stijn.arnauts@pandora.be
------------------------------
It took me a long time, but there
is finaly a new version :-) I can
only hope that some of you actually
enjoy it ;-) Have fun !
------------------------------
WARNING !!! This game is still
a beta version, and could lock up
your calc. In fact, this happens
regulary when I test it. I advise you
to use an emulator when playing this
game. I am in NO way responsable for
any loss of data.
------------------------------
You need Ashell or SOS to run this
game. Download one of them at:
   http://www.ticalc.org

Please read this file completely
before trying to play the game.
------------------------------
This game has rules that are
based on the 3th edition
Dungeons and Dragons game.
Because it is only a calculator
I couldn't possibly use the
spells, skills and feats and
still come up with a game that
fits on the limited memory.

For information about the rules
please look at www.playDND.com
There is (for now) a mentor in
the game who explains all the
rules but I advice all newcomers
to check out the site anyway.

This game does not have a
copyright and you can use the
engine code freely. In fact,
I would be honored if you do
so. You can even ask money for
it. But please give me some credit
and send me a copy of the game.
------------------------------
When you start the game for the first
time, please select the 'New game'
option using the ARROW KEYS, and press
2ND to confirm. Confirming 'Resume game'
will not do anything untill you start
the game for the second time, and
confirming 'Exit game' will quit the game.

Now you are asked to input your name.
Change the characters with the ARROW KEYS.
Confirm a character with 2ND. When you
press ALPHA, the name currently on screen
will be confirmed (that includes the current
character, so you should not press 2ND for
the last character in your name). You can not
erase characters unless you restart the game,
so be carefull !

When in movie mode, you can not do anything,
although you will sometimes have to press 2ND
or ALPHA to continue the dialogue.

When in move mode, you can explore
the map by using the ARROW KEYS.
You save and quit the game by pressing
the ALPHA key. Your progress is saved
inside the program, so when you send
the program to another calc, you also
send your save game. When you start the
game later you can select 'Resume game'.

When you are in dialogue mode, skip
through the text by pressing 2ND or ALPHA.

When in attack mode, select an option
with the ARROW KEYS, and press 2ND
to confirm. You can skip through the text
by pressing 2ND or ALPHA.

If you die while fighting, the game will
auto-exit, and everything will be saved except
for the last hit which killed you. You can then
continue the game from the main menu. eg: when
you have 1 HP and you take 3 points of damage,
you can continue the game with 1 HP.
-----------------------------
When you raise a level your character gets
better in the following way :

lvl 01 Exp 000 AC 15 Dam 1-8 Att 1
lvl 02 Exp 010 AC 16 Dam 1-8 Att 2
lvl 03 Exp 030 AC 16 Dam 2-9 Att 3
lvl 04 Exp 060 AC 17 Dam 2-9 Att 4

lvl 17 Exp 1360 AC 23 Dam 9-16 Att 17/13/9/5/2
lvl 18 Exp 1530 AC 24 Dam 9-16 Att 18/14/10/6/3
lvl 19 Exp 1710 AC 24 Dam 10-17 Att 19/15/11/7/4
lvl 20 Exp 1900 AC 25 Dam 10-17 Att 20/16/12/8/5

You start with 10 HP and your
HP increase each level with 1d10.

At the beginning of the game you
have 1 healing potion and 50 gold.
A healing potion will heal 1 to 8 HP.

You can buy potions and upgrade your weapons
and armor in various shops.
An upgrade for your weapon will increase all attack
bonuses and your weapon's maximum damage with one.
An upgrade for your armor will increase your AC with 2.
The cost of an upgrade will increase with each new upgrade.
-----------------------------
Right now the code is VERY unoptimized. I will work on this in later versions.
I also need your ideas for quests, since I really can't think of something good.

v0.5 - 6 new maps, some new tiles, and more enemies are unlocked.
     - I now you direct key input, which makes everything a lot faster. In fact,
movement is so fast that I had to slow it down. So if you think it should
be slower or faster just email me: I can change it in a couple of seconds.
     - Instead of Enter and Clear, I now you 2nd and Alpha. Refer to the top of
the readme file for more detailed instructions.
     - I improved the map-switching routine: you don't get placed in
a default spot anymore. This gives me more freedom (eg: In the new
maps you can cross a bridge and explore areas in maps that you
otherwise could not have reached because of a river)
     - I rewrote parts of the file that you are currently reading.
     - Major changes in the levelup routine. You can now gain damage and AC.
     - I changed some of the text to be shorter and..uhm..more mature :-)
     - I improved the move/nomove/special routine. I now have a table with
one byte for each tile that defines if the tile allows you to walk
on it (yes or no), or if the tile is 'special' (eg: humans,doors,.. )
This gives me more freedom, because the previous routine was based
on specific pixels in the tile that had to be black or white.
     - less flashing when you switch maps, as the display only gets cleared
once the screen has been completely drawn in the backbuffer.
     - shops only display the items they have available.
     - some other various improvements in the routines, maps and quests.
     - 18294 bytes large
v0.4b- fixed a small but nasty error.
v0.4 - drawing routing 20 times faster,I had a little error there :-)
     - save game not lost when playing other games
     - you can input your name (up/down to select a
letter/small letter/number, right for next letter,
clear to accept the name now on the screen)
     - I added a new small quest.
     - shops with healing potions/armor/weapons
     - monsters leave gold so you can buy stuff at the shops
     - I think all the engine code is now completed, so the next version
will have a lot more quests and maps !
     - 16595 bytes large
v0.3 - game needs Ashell to run ! (or sos)
     - in-game movies implented
     - added a bunch of new tiles
     - completely new maps, with the begin of a storyline, and 1 'big' quest.
     - programmed a mentor with the in-game movie engine to learn you
the basics of Dungeons and Dragons.
     - added 60 monsters from the Dungeons and Dragons Monster Manual
(yeah, you can't fight them all yet, but they're there. That's
why the size of the program increased so much.)
     - random encounters implented (you won't be attacked in city's)
     - 14473 bytes large
v0.2 (also named v0.1b) - level up implented !
     - another person added (to have 3 different enemy's)
     - 8780 bytes large
v0.1 (also named beta1) - first public release
     - intro movie with pictures
     - 2 screens to walk on
     - very bad save routing
     - sprite based engine with collision detection
     - you can move/talk to 3 people/fight with 2 people
     - 8872 bytes large
-----------------------------
Now, I need your help ! I need some advice !
- Should I keep the intro movie ? the size would decrease with 2500 bytes !
- Should I keep the mentor ? the size would decrease with 2200 bytes !
- Ideas for quests, tiles you created, an better version of the intro movie,
better text for the storyline,... are all VERY welcome !
They both aren't essential for the game, but I want to know your opinion !
I'll reply to your email as soon as possible (unless you don't want me to).
